MANSFIELD, PA— Rebecca Davis (Athens, PA) and Hannah Swartwood (Jersey Shore, PA), both Education majors at Mansfield University, attended the National Education Association (NEA) Northeast Regional Conference in Southbury, CT on November 3-4.
Davis and Swartwood were joined by students and NEA members from Pennsylvania, Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Jersey. They were given the opportunity to attend two breakout sessions including how to build a student program chapter, Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), formative assessment, politics in education, social and emotional learning, and teacher evaluation and mentoring.
They also heard from keystone speaker Scarlett Lewis, who lost her son in Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012. She has written a book and started a movement, the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement, in memory of her son.
Swartwood has also been selected as one of 25 students from across the country to attend the upcoming NEA Leadership Summit.
