MU Education and Special Education Department Hosts Mystery Family Literacy Night

MANSFIELD, PA— The Mansfield University Department of Education and Special Education hosted a Mystery Family Literacy Night at Warren L. Miller Elementary School in Mansfield on April 16.

Students from grades kindergarten through sixth and their families were invited to come and take part in literacy building activities. The theme was “What Really Happened to Humpty Dumpty?”

Students were read Jeanie Franz Ransom’s What Really Happened to Humpty Dumpty? by Rebecca Davis. Other Education students, including Madison Canfield, Brian Vanvestraut, Emily Penrod, Bailey Miller, Hannah Swartwood, Emily Mosher, Carra Stenevs and Kristopher Davis, created sound effects while the book was being read.

The first half of the book was read before students participated in the planned activities. Students then branched off into five groups based on grade level. The groups visited five different stations where they found clues to help them solve the mystery of what really happened to Humpty. Some stations included a version of the game headbands and twister, a ring toss, and much more.

Once all the students had visited each station they were brought back together to finish the book.

Students left with supplies such as pencils, a writing journal and a magnifying glass to help grow their literacy skills.
