After undergoing three brain surgeries in the past year, Zach McCloskey was officially and warmly welcomed back to campus on Monday morning for the start of the spring semester by Mansfield University President Dr. Charles Patterson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first day of school is always a big day, but in the\nhistory of higher education there has perhaps never been a student so looking\nforward to an 8:30 Monday morning calculus class as Zach. Mansfield University\nshares the excitement in having him back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The son of MU alums Steve and Pamela McCloskey, Zach withdrew\nfrom classes during his sophomore year last January in order to undergo a\nsurgical procedure with the hope of finally locating the source of epilepsy\nthat he was first diagnosed as a nine-year old in 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The procedures proved successful and presented an option\nthat could lead to the possibility of putting an end to the daily seizures he\nsuffered since his elementary school days. In order to have the hope of a\nnormal life, Zach elected to have a fist-size portion of his brain removed\ndespite just a 50\/50 chance of success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The operation was performed by Dr. Ben Kennedy at Children\u2019s\nHospital of Philadelphia on August 13 and Zach has been seizure-free for 154\ndays when he entered class today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cZach is really what Mansfield University and that hard-to-describe\nMountie culture represents\u201d said his father Steve. \u201cBecause of his condition\nand the fear of seizures, Zach would never have had the opportunity to attend\ncollege if it hadn\u2019t been for Mansfield.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen he couldn\u2019t attend classes for weeks at a time because\nof seizures, his professors and the support staff went out of their way to\nprovide him with the opportunity to still be successful,\u201d Steve continued. \u201cTwo\ndays after he withdrew to undergo the operations, every employee in student\nservices and financial aid signed a good luck card telling him they couldn\u2019t\nwait for him to come back. That type of caring and compassion just doesn\u2019t\nexist everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His mother Pam was equally as appreciative of the support\nfor Zach. \u201cThe support this community showed to us as a family was really a\ndifference-maker for Zach,\u201d explained Pam. \u201cHe could not have shown that\ntremendous courage and strength without the prayers, support and encouragement\nfrom so very many. We will always be so very grateful to everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m so excited to be back and I\u2019m so thankful for all the\nsupport from everyone\u201d, said Zach. \u201cIt\u2019s great to be a Mountie again.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
