A message to the Mansfield University Community from Dr. Charles Patterson<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dear Mansfield University\nColleagues and Friends:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you may be aware by now,\nthe State System of Higher Education\u2019s Board of Governors today selected me to\nserve as the Interim President of Shippensburg University. Since integration\nplanning\u00a0 began last year, I have been quite open with the campus\ncommunity about university integrations and the intended reduction of senior\nexecutive positions, including campus presidents, as part of the integration\nmodel. I hope you will understand that my transition to Shippensburg is part of\nthat process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am very proud of everything\nthat our Mansfield University community has accomplished together in just two\nshort years. Broadly speaking, we ended a 9-year enrollment decline in 2019 and\nhave grown our undergraduate enrollment by almost 10 percent. Fall 2020\nretention increased from 73 percent to 78.1 percent. We continue to diligently\naddress financial sustainability and changes in instruction and campus life\nrequired by the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, we have established a stronger\nculture of inclusivity in our communications and sharing of information that\nhas allowed us to honestly and openly address campus challenges and\nopportunities. Underpinning these praiseworthy accomplishments are the many\nindividual efforts of our students, faculty, and staff, which foster a\nsupportive campus climate and the fulfilment of our institutional mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colleen and I love Mansfield\nUniversity, and while it is an honor to be considered for the role of interim\npresident of Shippensburg University, our work at Mansfield must continue\nuninterrupted. Sustainability is critically important to our university, our\ncommunities, and most importantly our students. At last count, 151 individual\nMansfield students, faculty, staff, and trustees have been directly engaged in\nthe process of university integrations with Bloomsburg University and Lock\nHaven University. Our campus community is leading the change that will expand\nprogram breadth, maintain Mansfield\u2019s essential residential character, and\nachieve more together for the Northeastern region than any one institution\nmight accomplish on its own. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I make this transition in\nlate June, I will still support Mansfield University by continuing to serve\nwithin the State System, regardless of the outcomes of the integrations\nprocess. Our fourteen State System universities and their administrations share\na common mission that extends beyond the campus footprint. Each university must\noperate in a sustainable manner. This means I will continue being an\nunapologetic advocate for the value that Mansfield University, Shippensburg\nUniversity, and all other public, State System institutions provide to students\nin the Commonwealth and beyond. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thank you for the opportunity\nto serve alongside you and to continue our efforts to advance opportunities for\ncurrent and future generations of Mansfield University Mountaineers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
