MANSFIELD, Pa. \u2013 The full\nreturn of students to campus for the 2021-22 academic year brought back the\nexcitement of student-based research at Mansfield University\u2019s Grant Science\nCenter. Junior and senior students in the biology program, within the\nDepartment of Natural Sciences, have worked diligently throughout the year on\ntheir Mansfield University-supported independent research projects. Several\nstudents presented their work at state and regional conferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently, seven MU biology\nstudents presented their original research projects at the 53rd<\/sup> Annual\nCommonwealth of Pennsylvania University Biologists (CPUB) meeting at Lock Haven\nUniversity on April 9, 2022 (virtually). The conference drew about 45 research\npresentations by students from across the PA State System of Higher Education. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shaelyn Marx (Stroudsburg,\nPa.), a senior biology: cell and molecular concentration major, gave a platform\noral presentation on her research, \u201cImpact of Tumor Cell-Produced Cytokines\non Macrophage Polarization<\/em>.\u201d Marx, who was mentored by Dr. Kristen Long,\nwon 1st<\/sup> place for her talk in the category of Cellular and Molecular\nBiology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poster presentations were\ngiven by six students: Dain Becker, Alexis Easling, James Esposito, Lauren\nGriffith, Carly Root, and Kassidy Wood. Becker, Esposito, and Root competed in\nthe category of Ecology and Organismal Biology; Easling, Griffith, and Wood\ncompeted in the category of Cellular and Molecular Biology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dain Becker (Thurston, N.Y.)\na senior biology major presented on the \u201cEffects of Fertilizers on Phaseolus\nvulgaris<\/em>.\u201d James Esposito (Sayre, Pa.) a junior biology major presented on\nthe \u201cEffects of Road Salts on Plant Growth<\/em>.\u201d Both students were mentored\nby Dr. Robert Maris. Carly Root (Trout Run, Pa.) a senior biology: environmental\nbiology concentration major presented on \u201cSequestration of Toxic Metals by\nWild Mushrooms near Abandoned Coal Mine<\/em>.\u201d Root was mentored by Drs. Gregory\nCarson, Elaine Farkas, Gregory Moyer, and Jeanne Kagle. Root earned 1st<\/sup>\nplace for her poster presentation, and Esposito earned second place for his\nposter presentation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexis Easling (Corning, N.Y.)\na senior biology: cell and molecular concentration major presented on \u201cDeveloping\nan extraction protocol for high quality phage DNA from sewage sludge<\/em>.\u201d Kassidy\nWood (Horseheads, N.Y.) a senior biology major presented on the \u201cComparison\nof Evolution Rate of Ciprofloxacin Resistance among Staphylococcus epidermidis\nIsolates<\/em>.\u201d Both students were mentored by Dr. Kagle. Lauren Griffith (Upper\nMarlboro, Md.) a junior biology: cell and molecular concentration major\npresented on \u201cT cell impact on tumor microenvironment and therapy resistance<\/em>.\u201d\nGriffith was mentored by Dr. Long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last semester, Marx and\nGriffith also presented their Mansfield-supported research at regional conferences.\nMarx presented her research at the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges\n(COPLAC) 12th<\/sup> Annual Northeast Regional Undergraduate Research\nConference (virtually). Griffith presented her work at the 3rd<\/sup> Annual\nDevelopmental Biology New York Conference held virtually in Ithaca, N.Y.\n(virtually). The conference included student presenters at the undergraduate,\ngraduate, and post-doctoral levels, from local through international\nuniversities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students in the Mansfield\nUniversity biology program complete an independent research project as part of\ntheir degree requirements. Throughout a series of courses, students are trained\nhow to properly design, conduct, and present biological research. These\nrequirements allow students to gain first-hand training in a sub-discipline of biology\nand teach\/reinforce fundamental concepts by bringing them to life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
