Recent Mansfield graduate, Josh Grassi \u201818,\nhas published findings of his senior research project in the peer-reviewed\njournal Environmental\nDNA<\/a>, along with co-authors Dr. Gregory Moyer, associate professor of\nbiology at Mansfield; Chris Rees and \u00a0Dr.\nMeredith Bartron, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; and Dr. Heather Galbraith, U.S.\nGeological Survey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grassi developed a molecular technique to detect the American\nEel under water. This technique termed \u201cenvironmental DNA,\u201d or simply eDNA, can\ndetect the presence of an organism, site unseen, simply by taking a water\nsample. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJosh\u2019s work was instrumental in understanding whether this\ntechnology could be used for practical field applications,\u201d Moyer said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Typically, eels are detected using nets or through\nelectrofishing, a process that uses direct currents of electricity under the\nwater to affect the movement of fish to swim toward a particular spot. Both\nmethods can be invasive or harmful to the eels; eDNA allows for a much safer\nmethod of detection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grassi, who is employed by the Pennsylvania Department of\nEnvironmental Protection as an aquatic biologist, said, \u201cHaving the opportunity\nto conduct meaningful research while at Mansfield has opened many doors on a\npersonal and professional level. Through this project, I was able to learn\nvaluable lessons in following the scientific process, collaborating within a\nwork group, and presenting findings in a formal setting. These lessons were\ninvaluable in preparing me for the start of my career. I am beyond grateful for\nwhat this research project has done for me and encourage anyone sharing similar\ngoals to learn more about the possibilities at Mansfield.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe collaboration between faculty and students on research\nprojects is an important part of the educational experience at our now combined\nuniversity,\u201d said Commonwealth president Dr. Bashar W. Hanna. \u201cIt is exciting\nto see the work of Josh, Dr. Moyer, and the other collaborators be published in\na peer-reviewed publication. Congratulations to them all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
