MANSFIELD, PA – When Dai Davis\u00a0began her academic journey at Mansfield, a Commonwealth University, her goal was to help others by becoming a nurse. But through course work, she soon found that nursing wasn\u2019t the right career path. Instead, a class in social work led her to change her major and chart a new way to help others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI learned that my desire to help others was through empowerment\nand advocacy,\u201d Davis said. \u201cAddiction: Assessment, Treatment, and Prevent was\nthe first social work course that I enrolled in, and it opened my eyes to how I\nreally wanted to help people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen people hear the term social work they\nautomatically think it is a profession strictly based on helping children,\u201d\nDavis added. \u201cHowever, social and child welfare workers aim for family\npreservation as much as possible. Social work and social workers have so much\nto offer from gerontology to medical, financial, education, and even mental\nhealth. Bachelor of Social Work students understand how people interact at\nmicro, mezzo, and macro levels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Davis, a first-generation college student from\nPhiladelphia, chose to attend Mansfield after coming for a visit in the spring\nof 2019. She immediately felt at home and saw the faculty\u2019s passion for wanting\ntheir students to be successful and reach their full potential.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Tiffany Welch, BSW program director and Mansfield lead, says Davis is driven and works hard to get the most from her education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDai is one of many outstanding examples of a student leader\nin our Bachelor of Social Work program,\u201d Welch said. \u201cSince arriving, she has\ndemonstrated a commitment to the six core values of social work. She has stood\nout in various ways as she has held leadership positions and worked in our\ncampus cupboard, assisting the learners on campus with getting their basic\nneeds met.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDai has also been an advocate for her peers, been a voice\nfor the BIPOC community, and voted by her peers as a leader in both the social\nwork club and Phi Alpha honor society. She demonstrates a solid work ethic, and\nis committed to the practice of these skills here at Mansfield as well in her\nlife,\u201d Welch added. \u201cDai has already entered into a contract as a Child\nWelfare Education for Baccalaureates<\/a>\nstudent which requires her to commit to working in the state\nof Pennsylvania at a county children and youth agency for one year\npost-graduation. I am so proud of her desire to help others and be a positive\nvoice for change in our world.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Davis can devote time to being active on campus as president\nof the Social Work Club and treasurer\nof the Eta Chi chapter of Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society through several\nscholarships she has received. She also finds time to be on the cheer team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecause I did not have to worry about working\nor taking out loans to attend Mansfield University, I could capture the full\ncollege experience. I was able to join organizations and hold executive board\npositions,\u201d Davis said. \u201cThrough institutional and private scholarships, I can\nbridge the gap to cover the cost of attendance. Without these funds, I would\nnot be graduating as a first-generation student in five months. Not being able\nto afford school is the main reason people drop out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLife after graduation is all about obtaining\nlicensure and one day being Iyendai S. Davis, LCSW,\u201d Davis added. \u201cI plan on\nseeking a Master\u2019s in Social Work with a concentration in healthcare. After\ncompleting the program, I would like to serve as a medical social worker in intensive\ncare units and neonatal intensive care units.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
