Mansfield University Police Officer Raymi Gausline<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

As a child growing up in Tioga County,\nRaymi Gausline, a member of the Mansfield University Police Department, didn\u2019t\nhave to look far for a role model in the law enforcement field. Her dad, Raymond,\nwas the Chief of Police in Elkland Borough. It was him that motivated her to\nfollow in his footsteps as an officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy family always knew that I would\nend up in law enforcement, they just didn\u2019t know in what capacity,\u201d said\nGausline, an officer on the MU force since 2004. \u201cThey are very proud of all\nthat I have accomplished in my time on the force at Mansfield.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While police work has been viewed as a\nmale-dominated field, Gausline is working hard to break down those stereotypes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSome individuals still look at the profession as a\n“men’s” profession,\u201d says Gausline. \u201cI’ve been very lucky with being\nan officer at Mansfield University. Personally, I still feel, as a woman, I\nhave to prove, that I can do the job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doing good police work takes effort and\nGausline leans on some guidance she learned from her dad to help her each day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI just try to remember what I was\ntaught by my father growing up — stay calm,\u201d says Gausline. \u201cAlso, remember\nthe skills I’m trained in and know that communication is usually always key.\nCommunicate what you expect but also, give people a chance to feel heard,\nas\u00a0well.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for what\u2019s the most rewarding part of the\njob, Gausline answered quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHelping others. If I can help turn someone’s\ntough time into something positive, even if the consequences of their actions\nare still tough, then I think it’s a rewarding day. We see people at their\nabsolute worst, why make it even worse for them? A lot of times people just\nwant to be heard, respected, and given a little hope.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the future of women in law\nenforcement, Gausline likes what she has seen be done recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI feel like over the years law enforcement has\nalready done a lot to be more inviting to women. Getting rid of the stigma that\nwomen aren’t strong enough or emotionally able to do the job was probably the\nbiggest obstacle. I think women just need to prepare themselves. Stop worrying\nabout naysayers, they are in every profession. The only person “I”\nhave to prove anything to is “myself.” As long as, women think like\nthat, they don’t need the profession to change to invite them.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
