Edward’s poster, “Developing a Protocol for Forensic Soil Analysis”, advised by Professor Scott A. Davis, was judged by attendees including chemistry faculty and industrial chemists at the annual Scholes Lecture Poster Program, held at Alfred University, in Alfred, New York.

This annual event, hosted by Alfred University, presents research posters from science students in the northern tier of Pennsylvania and the southern tier of New York, including Mansfield University, Elmira College and Alfred University. The range of topics included extraction of organic compounds using a Keurig© coffee maker, activated charcoal for water purification and using porphyrin as an activator for destroying cancer cells.

In addition to the poster session, the evening featured awards for the top students from each of the represented schools.  Each college or university selected one student to be the recipient of a book award.  Edwards was honored at this portion of the meeting as well, as the Outstanding Senior from the Department of Chemistry at Mansfield University.

Following the awards ceremony, the students heard an address from Dr. Paolo Gabrielli of the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center at Ohio State University entitled “The Ice of the Planet as Witness to and Memory of Climate Change.”
