MANSFIELD, PA—The first ever Mountie Outdoor Adventure Camp was held at Mansfield University July 24-29. The camp attracted 12 students, 11 from the Mansfield area and one from New Jersey, ranging in age from nine to 17.Activities included mountain biking in Asaph, “Where we rode a section of the Laurel Classic Mountain Biking course,” Camp Director Mike Stamp said. “We then went to the Pine Creek Rail Trail and rode into the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon.”
The campers also went rock climbing at Blue Run Rocks and on an overnight hike on the Gillespie Point Trail, overlooking to town of Blackwell, and the Bohen Run Trail.
“We set up camp along the trail where we enjoyed dinner, campfire stories, and the stars,” Stamp said.
The students also challenged the low and high ropes course on campus and the rock wall in the Kelchner Fitness Center (KFC). They also participated in a number of other activities including dodgeball, volleyball and Frisbee at KFC, swimming at Decker Gymnasium Pool and a movie night in Sycamore Residence Hall.
Stamp, the assistant director at KFC, was assisted by Director Amy DeLozier, and Jimmy Guignard, associate professor of English, who also teaches mountain biking at MU, and Mansfield students Amy Plank and Nick Best, who were the camp counselors.
