MANSFIELD, PA— Mansfield University students, along with staff and faculty, were out in force on Saturday, April 12 for “The Big Event,” a day-long community service project.More than 300 students signed up to help clean parks, churches and along highways in the Mansfield area.
The volunteers also completed other projects in the Mansfield and Wellsboro area, such as scrapping, painting and performing other maintenance to get the fields ready for Mansfield Little League’s upcoming season, performing several projects at the Mansfield YMCA and helping out at the Mansfield Food Pantry.
“Our goal is to complete one thousand hours of community service, just today, and I think we’ll definitely do that with the numbers that we have,” Frank Crofchick, MU Community Conduct officer and Service coordinator,” said.
Crofchick, who coordinated the event and has been in his position at Mansfield less than a year, is very impressed with the community service mind-set of MU students.“At Mansfield we care about community service,” he said. “I think this breed of students coming up really cares and they want to have that relationship, building that bridge between the community and the University.”
In addition to the students, Crofchick credits his co-workers and student-workers in the Student Life Department, the Student Government Association (SGA) and the Community Service Club for making “The Big Event” a success.
“The Big Event” had been an annual event at MU but was disrupted the past few years due to weather. Plans call for it to return to its status as an annual spring event.
