MANSFIELD, PA— Before ever taking a class at Mansfield University, more than 20 incoming students took part in a new
leadership program this week.
The inaugural 101st First Year Student Adventure took place on Tuesday and Wednesday.
101st participants took part in several team building exercises and bonding experiences. The group also did trail maintenance and clean-up at Sand Run Falls in Arnot, PA as a community service project.
“The main focus of this program is to teach our new students about the Mansfield University Creed (character, scholarship, culture, and service) and the importance of community service and leadership while they are attending Mansfield and beyond,” Frank Crofchick, the program’s creator and MU Community Conduct Officer and Service Coordinator, said.
“The name, 101st, is based on Company B, 101st Infantry Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, who fought in the Civil War,” Crofchick added. “The soldiers were from Mansfield and the surrounding area and were later known as the Tioga Mountaineers.”
MU’s mascot and nickname, Mountaineers, honors the same Regiment.
