Marc Kiessling Honored at Regional Chemistry Meeting

MANSFIELD, PA— Marc Kiessling, a Mansfield University senior withProfessor Scott A. Davis and Marc Kiessling. a majors in Chemistry and Computer Science and minors in Mathematics and Philosophy, was the “Best Poster” at the Scholes Lecture and Poster Program at the Corning Sectional Meeting of the American Chemical Society on April 28.

The Annual Scholes Lecture Poster Program was held at Alfred University, NY. This annual event presents research posters from science students in the northern tier of Pennsylvania and the southern tier of New York, including Mansfield University, Elmira College and Alfred University.

The range of topics included organic synthesis of cockroach attractants, analysis of gunshot residue and effect of road salt on plants.

Kiessling’s poster, “The Effect of the Polarizability of the Chemical Environment on the 4f-4f Electronic Transitions of Holmium,” advised by Chemistry Professor Scott A. Davis, was judged by attendees including chemistry faculty and industrial chemists.

In addition to the poster session, the evening featured awards for the top students from each of the represented schools. Each college or university selected one student to be the recipient of a book award. Kiessling, from Mansfield, PA, was honored at this portion of the meeting as well, as the Outstanding Senior from the Department of Chemistry at MU.
