Academic & Human Development Faculty Present at National Conference

MANSFIELD, PA— Four members of the Mansfield University Academic and Human Development faculty presented at the National Association for Multicultural Education Conference on New Orleans, LA on October 1.(L-R) Vicki Sax, Deb Rotella, Kim Slusser and Jason Roscoe.

Vicki Sax, Kim Slusser, Jason Roscoe and Deb Rotella presented “Gateway and Gatekeepers: The Summer Experiences of Border Intellectuals and Their Students.”

In their presentation, the Mansfield faculty discussed ways to connect developmental education and multicultural education in higher education. Innovative programming to engage students of a summer access program in critical literacy and social justice learning were highlighted. They also discussed intentionally transitioning from gatekeepers to border intellectuals and social justice.

Slusser, director of the MU Learning Center, also presented “Transformative Classrooms: Utilizing Activist Literacy Strategies and LGBTQ Literature to Empower Allies” with a colleague from Westfield State University, Megan Kennedy.
