MANSFIELD, PA— Mansfield University Music faculty Joseph Murphy and Eun-Joo Kwak will perform in concert on Sunday, October 9, 2:30 p.m. in Steadman Theatre. The concert is free and open to the public.
Murphy is professor of saxophone and is in his 30th year of teaching at Mansfield. He has performed in all 50 states and 23 countries.
Locally, Murphy has performed on the Wellsboro Community Concert Series, several solos with the MU Concert Wind Ensemble, the Wellsboro Town Band and at the Chautauqua Institution. Most recently, he was a guest performer with “Think Pink Floyd” during their Mansfield concert on September 16.
Murphy is an avid proponent of new music, having premiered more than 50 new works, including pieces by MU colleague Andrew Walters and Pulitzer Prize winning composers Gunther Schuller, Bernard Rands and John Harbison
Kwak, a pianist in her second year on the MU faculty, is an internationally admired concert artist whose performances have led her to Europe, Russia, Asia, and throughout the U.S. Winner of top prizes in prestigious competitions such as the Samick Piano Competition in Korea, International Beethoven Sonata Competition in Memphis, and Tokyo International Piano Duo Competition in Japan. A highly acclaimed concerto soloist, Kwak has performed with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Chamber Orchestra, KBS Symphony Orchestra of Korea, and many others.
Kwak earned her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Seoul National University in Korea, Master of Music from Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University and Doctor of Music from Northwestern University.
Murphy and Kwak will be performing music by Mansfield graduate Brian Story ’78 Marilyn Shrude, Dorothy Chang, Pedro Iturralde and Henri Tomasi.
