MANSFIELD, PA—Justin N. Crowl, assistant professor, and Joshua Battin, associate professor and chair, of the Criminal Justice Administration (CJA) Department at Mansfield University, recently co-published a peer-reviewed article in The Police Journal: Theory, Practice and Principles.
The article, titled “Fear of Crime and the Police: Exploring Lifestyle and Individual Determinants among University Students,” empirically examined the relationship between student fear of crime and distinct lifestyle and individual constructs, utilizing lifestyle exposure as a theoretical framework.
Through a comparative analysis of two student samples, the study found that lifestyle choices, along with perceived risk of victimization, police visibility and certain demographic characteristics, were significant predictors of student fear of crime.
Results yield important implications for university administrators, campus police and policymakers, especially today as we continue to look for ways to reduce fear of crime and enhance safety and overall quality of life for students.
