MANSFIELD, PA— Six Mansfield University voice students came away winners in their respective natscategories at the Allegheny Mountain Chapter of the National Association of Teaching of Singing (NATS) Fall Student Auditions held October 29 at Millersville University.

Three more Mansfield students advanced to the semifinals. A total of 22 MU voice students competed.

The winning students, their categories and hometowns are:

Lower College Musical Theater:  Molly Cerep (Scranton, PA)
First Year College Women: Megan George (Harrisburg, PA)
First Year College Men: Bennett Salter (Morrisdale, PA)
Second Year College Women: Cassie Zinkan (Middletown, PA)
Second Year College Men: Robert Flora (Mansfield, PA)

The following students were semifinalists:

First Year College Men:  Kyle Cannon (Marathon, NY)
Second Year College Men: Jacob Foil-Charles (Wellsboro, PA)
Fourth/Fifth Year College Men: Lucas Lourenco (Carlisle, PA)

All the MU students study voice with Alissa Rose, Youngsuk Kim or Todd Ranney.

The top winners were featured in a final concert at the end of the auditions, where Cassie Zinkan sang the Czardas from Die Fledermaus and Bennett Salter sang The Boatman’s Dance by Aaron Copland. Both students study with Professor Kim.

All students received comment sheets from the judges, who were voice teachers and NATS members.

“These auditions are a great opportunity for the students to get feedback about their singing, hear other students from around the area, and be exposed to a wide variety of repertoire,” Rose said.

NATS is the largest association of teachers of singing in the world, with members in more than 25 countries, and the student auditions are one of the major activities of each NATS chapter.
