Deans’ Awards Presented to Jeffrey Bosworth and Tiffany Welch

MANSFIELD, PA— Jeffrey Bosworth and Tiffany Welch were presented with the Deans’ Awards at the annual Mansfield University Service Recognition Celebration on April 25.

Bosworth, professor of Political Science and chair of the John Ulrich and Jeffrey Bosworth.History, Philosophy and Political Science Department, was presented with the Deans’ Award for Outstanding Teaching by John Ulrich, dean of the College of Arts and Humanities.

In making the presentation Ulrich said, “The criteria for the Outstanding Teaching Award includes inspiring students to learn, encouraging intellectual interest, showing commitment to academic rigor, using innovative teaching techniques, exhibiting enthusiasm for teaching, conveying mastery of subject matter, and being available to students.  The students who nominated the award recipient affectionately refer to his office ‘the vortex, where quick visits often turn into interesting, hour-long conversations.  The students also said that they have developed a great respect for this professor and for his brilliant, witty, and sometimes irreverent lectures.”

Bosworth was nominated by students Corrine Rebuck and Paige Kisner.

Tiffany Welch, Social Work Program director and chair of Tiffany Welch and Nancy Sidell.the Department of Social Work and Sociology, was honored with the Deans’ Award for Outstanding Academic Advising.

She was unable to attend the celebration because she was leading a student field research trip. Nancy Sidell, dean of the College of Natural and Social Sciences, presented Welch with her plaque on April 26.

In making the announcement, Sidell said, “Criteria for this award included quality of advising, innovative methods of advising, availability, knowledge of policies and procedures, caring attitude, establishing and monitoring academic or career goals, and appropriate referral to other offices. The student described this nominee’s continuous contact with advisees and a willingness to provide a boost of confidence when needed. The student described feeling heard without fear of being judged. The nominee has a ‘genuine heart and graciously gives up her free time to take care of her campus children. She has helped me realize that grades matter, trying your hardest is the ultimate accomplishment, and being a good person matters even more. She has shown me that the need to care is a contagious quality.’”

Katlyn Lutchko nominated Welch.

Nominations for the Deans’ Awards were solicited across the campus community, 25 nominations in total were made.  A five-member committee completed a blind review of nominations and recommended the winners.

Bosworth and Welch received a plaque and a $500 stipend to use for their continuing education.
