MANSFIELD, PA-Mansfield University will present Les Misérables on March 6-9 at Straughn Hall.
The musical based on the novel of the same name by French poet and novelist Victor Hugo, Les Misérables is now the world’s longest-running musical, seen by over 65 million people in 42 countries. The film version of the play, released in 2012, was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, winning three.
Set in early 19th-century France, it is the story of Jean Valjean, a French peasant, and his quest for redemption after serving 19 years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread for his starving sister’s child. Valjean decides to break his parole and start his life anew after a kindly bishop inspires him by a tremendous act of mercy, but he is relentlessly tracked down by a police inspector named Javert. Along the way, Valjean and a slew of characters are swept into a revolutionary period in France, where a group of young idealists make their last stand at a street barricade.
Les Misérables is directed by David Deitz, a 1974 Mansfield graduate, music direction is by Professor Sheryl Monkelien and 1993 MU graduate Peter Davis is technical director.
