Three Alumni awarded Presidential Coin for Excellence

MANSFIELD, PA— Mansfield University President Fran Hendricks awarded the Mansfield University Presidential Coin for Excellence to three alumni; Lew Lee ’62, Donna (Congdon) Mokrzynski ’55 and Dr. Donald Stanton ’53, at an alumni and friends event held in University Park, FL on March 7.(L-R) Donna (Congdon) Mokrzynski ’55, Dr. Donald Stanton ’53, Mu President Fran Hendricks '79, Lew Lee ’62.   Donna (Congdon) Mokrzynski ’55 served six years on the MU Alumni Association Board of Directors, including two as president. She led the Class of ’55 reunion effort in 2005 and served on the Save North Hall Committee, among her many efforts to support Mansfield. In 1999, Mokrzynski received the Elsie Burke Service Award, which recognizes outstanding leadership, loyalty and service to MU. Professionally, Mokrzynski taught for 33 years.

Lew Lee ’62 was a member of the Mansfield Council of Trustees for 25 years, serving 10 years as chair. He has served on various other committees in support of Mansfield and Lee and his wife Linda, a 1961 graduate, established a scholarship and are members of the President’s Circle of Giving. Lee received the Alumni Citation Award, which recognizes contributions to society through professional, civic and philanthropic work, and leadership activities, in 1988 and the Elsie Burke Service Award in 2010. Professionally, Lee was executive director of the Pennsylvania Economy League, Inc. until retiring in 1993.

Dr. Donald Stanton ‘53 is a professor emeritus in Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University. He was the founding chairperson of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and served as medical director of the college and the Rehabilitation Clinic at Michigan State University Clinical Center of Mid-Michigan Rehab Center. Stanton practiced medicine in Troy, PA from 1968-79 before going to Michigan State.

The coin was developed by Hendricks and designed by MU Publications Director Andy Worthington. It is awarded selectively to persons who have contributed greatly to the university, using the Mansfield Creed; Character, Scholarship, Culture and Service as a guideline.

The coin bears several symbols representing historical highlights and other aspects of the university that make it distinctive.

The event at the University Park Country Club was hosted by Mokrzynski and Stanton. In addition to President Hendricks, Alan Crippen ’69 was a speaker. Crippen served in three branches of the U.S. Armed Forces as well as the Secret Service.
