MANSFIELD, PA— The Mansfield University Music Department will celebrate OcTUBAfest on October 11-12.
On Sunday, October 11, 7:30 p.m. in Steadman Theatre, the MU Tuba-Euphonium Studio will perform a recital under the direction of Nathan Rinnert.
On Monday, October 12, 7:30 p.m. in Butler Center, Room 163, guest artists Master Chief Musician (MUCM) Karl Schultz, a 1992 Mansfield graduate, and Senior Chief Musician Jarrod Williams, both of the renowned U.S. Naval Academy Band, will present a recital.
Both recitals are free and open to the public.
MUCM Schultz, a native of Wellsboro, PA, comes from a long line of Mansfield graduates, including his parents, grandmother and aunt. He holds a bachelor’s degree in instrumental performance, studying with Donald A. Stanley and Stephen P. McEuen.
MUCM Schultz has performed with the Tidewater Winds, the Dominion Brass Band, the Virginia Symphony, and the German Band in “Das Festhaus” at Busch Gardens, Williamsburg. He has been a featured soloist with both the U.S. Army Orchestra and the Brass of the Potomac at the U.S. Army Band’s Tuba/Euphonium Conference. He gave the world premiere of David Gaines’ Concertino for Euphonium and Concert Band with the Peabody Wind Ensemble. MUCM Schultz has performed on euphonium, baritone, and E-flat tenor horn in the Spires Brass Band, the Atlantic Brass Band, and the Baltimore Area Brass Band of the Salvation Army.
MUCM Schultz began his military career in 1993 by joining the Army and serving as the euphonium soloist with The U.S. Continental Army Band, Ft. Monroe, VA. He was featured on the band’s compact disc entitled The Spirit of Victory.
In 1996, MUCM Schultz auditioned and was selected for duty with the U.S. Naval Academy Band as euphonium and trombone player in the marching band and ceremonial units. Since joining the band, MUCM Schultz has been a featured soloist on several occasions. He has spent over 10 years working in the band’s supply office, where he currently holds the position of Leading Chief, and is also the band’s Leading Chief Petty Officer of Safety.
MUCM Schultz has been awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Good Conduct Medal (four awards), Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal (two awards), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Navy Expert Pistol Shot Medal.
Senior Chief Musician Jarrod Williams is a 1990 graduate of Republic High School in Republic, MO. He earned Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Kansas, and was awarded a Doctor of Musical Arts in tuba performance from the University of Maryland in 2012.
During his time at the University of Kansas, MUCS Williams performed as principal tubist with the symphonic band, wind ensemble, orchestra, jazz ensemble, new music ensemble, tuba consort, and men’s basketball band. He has also played with regional orchestras in Kansas, Missouri, and Maryland, served as chairman of International Tuba and Euphonium Conference Competition Committees in 1998 and 2010, respectively, and performed in such diverse environments as Blues Alley and the Delmarva Chicken Festival.
MUCS Williams auditioned and was selected for assignment with the Naval Academy Band in 1996. Following recruit training at RTC, Great Lakes, he reported for duty as tubist with the marching band and ceremonial units. He was named Principal Tubist in 1998. He is the band’s training officer and awards writer. An accomplished arranger, MUCS Williams’ transcriptions have been performed by the Naval Academy Band’s tuba quartet, brass quintet, brass ensemble, and ceremonial bands, as well as the Washington Symphonic Brass and Symphonia, a professional tuba ensemble.
MUCS Williams has been awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Good Conduct award (six awards), National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Navy Expert Pistol Shot Medal.
In addition to performing in recital while at MU, Master Chief Musician Schultz and Senior Chief Musician Williams will present workshops, give lessons and interact with MU students.
