Turtle Island Quartet to Perform September 29

MANSFIELD, PA— The Turtle Island Quartet will perform in concertThe Turtle Island Quartet on Monday, September 29, 7:30 p.m. at Steadman Theatre. The concert is free and open to the public.

Performing their new program, “Birth of the Cool,” the two-time Grammy winning ensemble continues to innovate with a program that celebrates the luminaries who ushered in a whole new era of jazz.

The Turtle Island Quartet employs their signature groove-based rhythmic techniques to create brand-new arrangements of cool jazz standards that prove that the line between classical music and jazz is much thinner than one might think. In addition to classics by Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, John Carisi and others, the quartet will premiere a brand-new work by co-founder and violinist David Balakrishnan entitled Rebirth of the Holy Fool.

Rounding out the program will be selections from the Turtle Island Quartet’s latest album, Confetti Man, which was released last October on Azica.

Since its inception in 1985, the Turtle Island Quartet, comprised of David Balakrishnan and Mateusz Smoczynski on violins, Benjamin von Gutzeit on viola and Mark Summer playing cello has been a singular force in the creation of bold, new trends in chamber music. The Quartet won Grammy Awards in 2006 and 2008.
