MANSFIELD, PA— Eight Mansfield University students, all members of Lambda Alpha Epsilon (LAE), the criminal justice professional coed fraternity, participated in an inmate mock career fair on September 3 at Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary. The students were accompanied by Assistant Professor Justin Crowl.
The penitentiary, known as “The Big House”, is a high security federal prison housed within the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the U.S. Department of Justice.
The MU students had the opportunity to interview numerous inmates and speak to them about the job market and their post-release plans. Students were also able to ask questions and engage in discussions with staff and administrators, many of whom are alumni of MU and the Criminal Justice Administration Department. A guided tour of the facility followed.
“The experience of visiting a federal correctional facility was very rewarding, especially considering that it was the first time that these students went behind the walls of a federal prison,” Crowl said. “It is exactly these type of events that allow students to experience for themselves the inner workings of the criminal justice system.”
The LAE members who participated are Justina Day, Samantha Boas, Brian Kircher, Dana Mahini, Andre Morton, Martina Padilla, Maryann Personius and Rian Waldbrunn.
